Back in the day, when I first started doing business online, I had no idea what I was doing for real.
I was just listening to everybody who I thought was successful.
Especially, since I had a skill already. I could build and design websites for people.
I had the skill, people needed that skill at the time, so they would hire me to do the service for them.
Simple.
What blinded me was that anyone could learn that skill or make creating websites easier (which we have today).
It seemed like once I started doing it, everybody and they momma was designing websites. The skill became a commodity.
Then I was on a mission to solve that problem.
So I invested heavily, purchasing courses on:
- Digital Marketing
- Copywriting
- Facebook Ads
- Sales & Funnels
- and more stuff that I is really irrelevant these days
Honestly, not much success came from those endeavors (but I learned a lot, not just about business, but about myself)
But the main thing every one of those courses taught me was.
The main thing was that I had to niche down.
- I had to identify a starving market (like relationships).
- Break that down into a sub-market (like self love).
- Then narrow in on a niche-market (like healing from a toxic relationship).
This was it! I found the secret sauce.
Just niche down sis!
This is still the regurgitated advice you hear in so many words today.
And this is the main thing that confuses people, and keeps them from moving forward.
They feel like if they don’t pick a niche that is good enough, they will fail and lose money.
The majority of people are scared to lose(fail) and so they spend their time:
- Bouncing from one idea to the next (I’m guilty)
- Learning skills for that particular niche (not a bad thing, but they might not truly like it)
- End up with no money or leverage to show for it (definitely a bad thing)
Personally, I’m a rebel. I like to challenge the norms (common beliefs), go against the grain, and question everything (I’ve been this way my whole life, not just in business). I like to make the impossible, possible.
I do this because most people dive into things without question. They accept them as being law without question.
Yes, they may get some results, and so because of that, people stand firm in that belief. Not really knowing or being open to knowing if there is a better way.
The business world has changed dramatically, with the rise of digital products and social media.
There’s a difference between the way we attract customers now. Consumers are more educated and aware now. The same methods don’t work.
Most of the things people are telling you to do is outdated, but they are just telling you what worked for them (so keep that in mind). What they are saying isn’t law.
Believe it or not, YOU are the infinite niche.
When you can overlap your skills & interests, you can then focus more on just being BEST self, and then you’re in a category of one.
Being a category of one has pros and cons just like anything else, except the pros outweigh the cons:
- You can to do what you enjoy
- You’re not confined to talk solely about one topic
- You can explore all of your interests without worrying about a niche
- You will be more relatable to other humans (people, who are multidimensional)
- You can build trust and people get to know all the sides of you and build real relationships
- You build a reputation over time
- The trust factor starts to become a deeper level (people function with you because of who you are)
- You can always evolve and pivot your brand because you’re growing and changing as an individual
- People like to do business with “real people”
The only con, I can think of is that its a slower form of growth, but if you’re in this for the long-haul the slow and steady growth shouldn’t even be a factor. You should expect to be doing this long-term to build an empire from it.
Just ask yourself this…
How many things are you interested in? How many people do you follow with completely different interests? Believe me, you follow a lot of people for various reasons.
If that is the case, why do you think you’d have to only stick to one interest when you follow people that talk about a variety of things?
People think that they will dilute their messaging if they go broad, rather than niching down and that they won’t make any money.
I called bullshit on that from day one! I’ve always felt off, like something was wrong with that, nor could I ever just stick to it, even when I tried.
The reason why is that it goes against “human nature”. We as human beings have multiple interests. We like a lot of different things, not just one thing.
When I discuss creating digital products, we all know there are many types of digital products, and I love them all.
I teach the majority of them, not just one of them.
But what else falls in line with digital product creation???
Tech? (meaning platforms & softwares)
AI Prompts? (innovative tools)
Mindset? (self development)
Understanding human nature?
Etc…
In my next diary entry, I’ll break down the some things you should take into consideration in regards to the order in which you should build out your empire.
